Inspired by a Native American Indian Chief of the same name, Oshkosh is a prosperous city located where Fox River enters Lake Winnebago. Oshkosh began as a center of lumber production and is still sometimes referred to as the Sawdust Capital of the World. Its location near major waterways and a prominent rail station allowed the Oshkosh lumber industry to bloom. Today, Oshkosh is a popular place to live for all walks of life. It registered a thriving population of over 66,000 during the most recent census.
